Sheffield Funeral Costs: Council Fees and What to Expect

Sheffield City Council charges £1,175 for an adult cremation in 2026/27. An unattended cremation is £500 and an attended direct cremation is £725. A standard adult burial comes to £2,836 once the £1,260 grave lease and £1,576 digging fee are added. These are the council's own fees. The funeral director's charges, a celebrant, flowers and a headstone come on top.

The figures below come from the council's price list for 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. Fees are reviewed each April, so check the council's current list before you book.

How much does a funeral cost in Sheffield?

No one publishes an official Sheffield average, so it helps to build the figure from three parts:

1. The council's fee for the cremation or the grave (tables below).
2. The funeral director's fee for collecting and caring for the person, the coffin, vehicles and arranging everything.
3. Extras such as a celebrant or minister, flowers, printed orders of service and a wake.

For a national benchmark, SunLife's Cost of Dying Report 2026 put the average simple attended funeral at £3,828 across the UK and £3,717 in Yorkshire and the Humber. SunLife is an insurer, so treat it as a survey rather than a price list. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that funeral directors with five or more branches averaged £2,778 per funeral in the year to August 2024, before crematorium, celebrant and other third-party costs.

As a rough guide only, that national director average plus Sheffield's £1,175 cremation fee comes to about £3,950 before any extras. Your quote could be higher or lower depending on the firm and the funeral you choose.

What does cremation cost at Sheffield's crematoria?

Sheffield has two council crematoria: City Road (S2 1GD) and Hutcliffe Wood. The adult fee covers the medical referee's fees, music, a standard urn, up to 45 minutes in the chapel and a certificate for collecting or scattering the ashes. It includes a £61 environmental surcharge.

The council says the attended direct cremation was introduced to help with the cost-of-living crisis and funeral poverty. If you want a short service without paying for a full slot, it is worth asking about.

There is no charge to parents for a child under 18, or a stillborn baby after 24 weeks. The council reclaims those fees from the Children's Funeral Fund for England.

What does burial cost in Sheffield?

Burial in a council cemetery has two charges: the exclusive right of burial (a lease on the grave) and the interment, or digging, fee. You pay both.

A cemetery chapel at Abbey Lane, Shiregreen or Tinsley Park costs £238 for up to 30 minutes if the burial is in a Sheffield cemetery. Applying to put up a new headstone costs £260. The council also lists separate Muslim burial fees, including a concrete-lined grave for £3,981 in total on a 50-year lease. The price list does not show a separate non-resident rate, but confirm this with the council when you book.

The council lists 16 cemeteries, among them Abbey Lane, City Road, Wisewood and Tinsley Park. The death must be registered before a burial.

Is woodland burial available in Sheffield?

Yes, at Wisewood Cemetery. The council's woodland burial has these terms:

• one burial only per grave
• a 50-year lease costs £1,360, which includes £100 for a marker stone and a tree from a list of native trees
• you add the £1,576 interment fee, so a 50-year woodland burial comes to £2,936
• a 90-year lease costs £2,368 before the interment fee
• grass is cut twice a year to let wildlife and wildflowers flourish, and no other memorials are allowed

How can you keep the cost down?

• Plan a memorial separately. A direct cremation lets you hold a gathering later at a venue you choose, with no rush.
• Ask for the Standardised Price List. Since the CMA's Funerals Market Investigation Order in 2021, funeral directors must publish a standard price list, including their prices for an attended and an unattended funeral. You can compare firms without phoning round. Get written quotes from two or three.

How do you choose a funeral director in Sheffield?

GOV.UK says funeral directors must publish a price list for a standard set of products and services. It suggests choosing one that belongs to a trade body such as the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) or the Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF), which have codes of practice. Citizens Advice says you can search the Funeral Directors Register and compare standard price lists.

You are not tied to a firm a hospital or care home suggests. Ask each one:

1. What is included in the professional fee, and what is extra?
2. Where will my loved one be kept?
3. What deposit do you need, and when is the balance due?
4. Can you show the council fee and celebrant fee as a total in writing?

How do you register a death in Sheffield?

Deaths in Sheffield are registered at Sheffield Register Office in the Town Hall, Pinstone Street, S1 2HH. The council says you must register within 5 days of the register office receiving the paperwork from the medical examiner or coroner. You contact the register office, which arranges a phone call with the registrar and then an in-person appointment.

Death certificates cost £12.50 each, and the registrar gives you a reference number for Tell Us Once, which reports the death to most government bodies in one go. The funeral cannot go ahead until the death is registered and the registrar has issued the paperwork for burial or cremation.

What help is there paying for a funeral?

• Funeral Expenses Payment. You can claim if you or your partner get Universal Credit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit or Housing Benefit, among other conditions. It covers burial or cremation fees, some travel and up to £1,000 for other costs such as the funeral director. It will not usually cover the whole bill, and it is deducted from any money you later get from the estate. You must apply within 6 months of the funeral. • The deceased's money. Citizens Advice says you can ask the bank to pay funeral costs from the person's account, even when it is frozen. A funeral director may also agree to deferred payment until the estate is settled.
• Children's Funeral Fund for England. It covers burial or cremation fees for under 18s and babies stillborn after 24 weeks.
