Leeds Funeral Costs: Council Fees and What to Expect

Leeds City Council charges £1,214 for a standard adult cremation and £395 for a cremation before 9am with no service. An adult burial costs £3,389: a £1,913 grave plot plus a £1,476 interment fee. These are the council's fees. The funeral director's charges, a celebrant, flowers and a headstone come on top.

The figures come from the council's fees and charges page as it stood in September 2026. The page does not state a start date, and fees usually change each year, so confirm the price with Bereavement Services when you book.

How much does a funeral cost in Leeds?

No one publishes an official Leeds average, so build the figure from three parts:

1. The council's fee for the cremation or the grave (tables below).
2. The funeral director's fee for collecting and caring for the person, the coffin, vehicles and arranging everything. The council says these fees typically range from £800 to £2,000, though the CMA's larger-firm average is higher.
3. Extras such as a celebrant or minister, flowers, printed orders of service and a wake.

For a wider benchmark, SunLife's Cost of Dying Report 2026 put the average simple attended funeral at £3,828 across the UK and £3,717 in Yorkshire and the Humber. SunLife is an insurer, so treat this as a survey rather than a price list. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that funeral directors with five or more branches averaged £2,778 per funeral in the year to August 2024, before crematorium, celebrant and other third-party costs.

As a rough guide only, that national director average plus Leeds's £1,214 cremation fee comes to about £3,990 before extras. Your own quote may be higher or lower.

What does cremation cost in Leeds?

Leeds City Council runs three crematoria: Lawnswood (Otley Road, Adel, LS16 6AH), Cottingley (Elland Road, LS11 0EU) and Rawdon (Leeds Road, Rawdon, LS19 6JP).

Two points catch families out:

• Timing. The £500 charge applies if a service runs 20 minutes over or nobody attends. Ask the funeral director how long your slot is and plan the order of service around it.
• Coffin size. The maximum coffin size for cremation is 96cm x 61cm x 213cm. The council adds £114 if the size is not declared, so give the measurements when you book.

There is no charge for the cremation or burial of a Leeds resident aged 17 or under.

What does burial cost in Leeds?

A burial has two main council charges: the plot, which gives you the exclusive right of burial for a fixed 50 years, and the interment fee for opening and closing the grave.

Burying in an existing family grave costs £1,476 for the interment, with no new plot. The council lists 24 cemeteries, and some are full. It says cemeteries marked available are for burial now, not for reserving ahead. Do non-residents pay more in Leeds?

The council says more fees may apply if a burial or cremation is not for a Leeds resident. Its fee page does not set out a general surcharge, although it lists non-resident fees for children, such as £450 for a cremation aged 1 to 17 and £952 for a burial.

If the person lived in Leeds for years but moved to a care home outside the city, ask Bereavement Services whether resident fees apply before you confirm a date. The answer can change the bill by a large amount.

Is there a cheaper way to arrange a funeral in Leeds?

• Hold the memorial separately. Ashes can be kept while you plan a gathering later at a venue of your choice.
• Compare Standardised Price Lists. Since the CMA's Funerals Market Investigation Order in 2021, funeral directors must publish a standard price list and show the local crematorium fees they pass on. Get written quotes from two or three firms.

How do you arrange a funeral in Leeds?

Most families arrange the funeral through a funeral director, who books the date with the council. You can also contact Leeds Bereavement Services directly at bereavementservices@leeds.gov.uk or on 0113 376 0001 (Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 3:30pm). Its office is at Farnley Hall, Hall Lane, LS12 5HA.

The council says you can arrange a funeral yourself but it will take time and effort. You collect the paperwork from Farnley Hall, and forms must be back by 10am two working days before the funeral, or a late fee applies. The death must be registered first.

How do you register a death in Leeds?

The main office is Leeds Register Office at Merrion House in the city centre, which has the most appointment slots. There are also offices in Armley, Moor Allerton, Morley, St George's (Middleton) and Seacroft.

The council says you must register within 5 days of being told the registrars have the paperwork. That clock starts when the medical examiner's certificate reaches the registry. Once they have the documents, the registrars contact you by text, email or phone with a booking link. The registry's number is 0113 222 4408.

What help is there paying for a funeral in Leeds?

• Funeral Expenses Payment. You can claim if you or your partner get a qualifying benefit, such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit. It covers burial or cremation fees, some travel and up to £1,000 for other costs, but not usually the whole bill. • Leeds Credit Union. The council says it offers a low-cost loan to pay the full cost of a funeral. Read the terms carefully, since this is a loan you repay.
• Welfare Rights. The council's Welfare Rights team can help work out eligibility on 0113 376 0452.
